Why the fashion world refuses to acknowledge Duchess Kate as a style icon and Why fans of Kate prove them wrong

I was doing my daily search for Kate related news today and I've noticed a trend among articles. It seems the fashion world and a healthy number of journalists refuse to accept Kate as a fashion icon. After the recent 'Bridal Fashion Week' the press joyfully wrote there was no "discernible Kate Middleton effect"
British bespoke wedding dress designer Sassi Holford said,

"The long sleeved demure look was already emerging before Kate Middleton appeared in her Sarah Burton designed gown. Five years ago, It was all strapless. The last two years - and more this year than any other people say, I don't want strapless, What can you offer me".

Below a model wears a gown by Sassi Holford which seems very Kate inspired to me.....

Other designers including Matthew Williamson and Gregory Nato spoke along the same lines. You can read the article Here. There is absolutely no doubt Kate has influenced bridal trends. I'm sure most of you who have attended weddings this year have noticed lace, longer sleeves and boleros being worn by brides more so than in previous years.

TV fashion presenter Mary Portas felt the need to criticise the Duchess too saying "Is that fashion? No. I do not know how can you say she is a fashion icon. I just don't get that". Portas, not known for mincing her words, recently labelled the female members of the British Cabinet "an ugly bunch".

Others including designer Vivienne Westwood have made similar comments. However designers such as Alice Temperly and Julien MacDonald have spoke out in favour of Kate's style with MacDonald stating Kate is "chic and sophisticated". I've decided to take a look at trends Kate has inspired and why I think she is a fashion icon. With thanks to the Daily Mail for putting an excellent article together documenting Kate's fashion influence.

Firstly 'The Kate effect' has been simply amazing for the retailers she chooses. British high street label Reiss (they currently have up to 40% off on selected lines :) had to reissue the £159 dress she wore for the engagement photos while their website crashed after Kate wore their Shola dress while meeting the Obamas. London based label Alexander McQueen experienced a fifty percent increase in turnover compared to the previous year after Kate wore a Sarah Burton wedding gown. In these recessionary times, Kate is a huge asset to British labels who need all the business they can get.

No one can deny the massive popularity of Nude court shoes since Kate has been photographed wearing her favourite L.K. Bennett Sledge 2 Pumps. Even Carole and Pippa Middleton are fans..........(You know you're a trendsetter when you're mother and sister want to emulate your look :)) At Zara Phillips' wedding it was pointed out almost every woman in attendance was wearing nude court shoes.

From Kate's wedding gown to the Royal tour and most recently while attending a wedding, Kate is clearly a fan of lace. Classic dresses with clean lines look spectacular with lace detail. It's a look that works wonderfully for the Duchess and any woman can emulate it. Journalist Jessica Vince wrote "Middleton mania has influenced every designer, most notably through lace sleeves that repli Kate the famous Alexander McQueen gown of Royal Wedding day".

Kate's stunning sapphire and diamond engagement ring, originally Princess Diana's sparked a trend for colourful gemstones. Replicas of Kate's ring sold out all over the world. Dervla Cogan from By Brillians jewellery company said

"In the run up to the Royal wedding we constantly had customers visit our shop and emailing our website requesting a similar piece to Kate's engagement ring. We created a piece inspired by the famous ring and it was hugely popular. It sold out before the big day and people who wanted it had to be put on a waiting list. Even after the wedding it continues to be one of our best selling items".

These are but a few of the trends Kate has inspired but what is the true testament of a style icon? Is it someone designers are influenced by? Someone who makes the headlines? In my opinion a true style icon is someone who is admired and emulated by people like you and me. From your average college student, businesswoman, homemaker and fashionista, Kate's style is loved. Women want to dress like her.

I asked some wonderful fans of Kate's style what they love about her look. I would like to sincerely thank each of them for taking the time to participate. It is greatly appreciated.

Chiara via Twitter "How she's always appropriate wears the perfect thing according to the event and her role".

Kate Middleton Fans via Twitter "I love how her style is timeless, yet accentuated with such grace. She truly is such an icon, and everyone can wear it".

Alyssa Via Twitter "She's classic and elegant, not overdone. Clean lines, sticks to what works.

Pamela Via Twitter "She always looks effortless. Sounds cliche, but true. She wears clothes, they don't wear her. Never overdone".

Anne Marie Via What Kate Wore Facebook "Several things. I really like choosing things she has worn (the exact not a copy) because it always is very high quality, and has, I guess you would say, a little twist to it. Like the ruffle on the bottom of the trench coat,..".

Brittney Mick Via WKW Facebook "I love how glamorous yet effortless she looks".

Jami Via WKW Facebook "I am also young like Kate and I really like that she is making it stylish to dress conservative, but cute and classy. You don't need to dress trashy to get noticed".

Amber Via WKW Facebook "I love how she "recycles" her clothes as they say. She is not afraid to be photographed in it twice. I love how she wears pantyhose. But I think we can all agree we like her conservative, classy attire".

Dolores Via WKW Facebook "I also like her influence on young girls. She's showing them that you can be beautiful and elegant without being trendy, and garish".

Alyssia Via the blog "I personally love her style, her courage to put sophistication back on the map (so sick of this Lady GaGa/it's OK to dress like a ho fad), and the way she pulls it all off by wearing (for the most part) reasonably priced clothing in a way which makes even the least of us feel as if we can always channel our inner princess. Most of all, and beyond her "style icon" status, she is a good person, an exceptional lady, an advocate for humanity and charity. And that's what makes her one of my favorite people on the planet".

The general opinion appears to be that it's Kate's classy, effortless style we all love. It's attainable, yet glamorous. Affordable, yet chic. Modern, yet classic....................
Why do you all love Kate's style? If you would like your comment added to the list please let me know :)
Again a huge thank you to the women who contributed to this post. Kate has some wonderful fans :)

Royal Wedding

On Friday April 29th at 11 a.m. over two billion people watched with baited breath as Kate Middleton married her university sweetheart Prince William of Wales. She arrived at Westminster Abbey with her Father Mike in a stunning Sarah Burton gown with it's nine ft train, lace detail and classic detail it seems certain to become one of the iconic dresses of our time. After months of preparation the ceremony went perfectly. Kate's mother Carole and the Queen were seen looking quite emotional as she entered wearing a Tiara from the Queen with a veil, opting to do her own make up. William remarked as he saw her 'You look lovely, you look beautiful' As they kissed twice on the balcony, now Duke and Duchess of Cambridge their wedding day was without question, perfection!

Kate Moss raves about Kate Middleton

The Duchess of Cambridge can finally consider herself a style icon after receiving a seal of approval from Britain's most famous supermodel.

Kate Moss was one of the millions of fans who tuned in to watch the royal wedding. Moss enjoyed the wedding immensely and does not mind losing her status as Britain's most famous 'Kate' to the Duchess. The 37-year-old watched the wedding in the country with loads of friends and kids who were all crying. 'There were tears. We were like, ok you can marry Harry'.

The iconic model adored Kate's look on the day. 'Oh I love her. She was so chic and seamless. And just beautiful. It was just as a royal wedding should be. Kate added, 'I'd quite like to be Lady Kate but I'm happy as I am.' It may happen given her massive contribution to fashion! Kate Middleton will be happy to hear such positive feedback after recent accusations alleging that her wedding dress was a copy and sister Pippa seemingly taking over the limelight. Kate's style has been the subject of debate for years, however, I think she has always had a simplistic, chic look. From her preppy look in college, to beautiful Issa dresses, Kate has been loyal to her signature, classic style and is finally getting credit for it.

How The 'Kate Effect' Could Save Label Jesiré

When it was announced Wednesday night that Kate's beautiful 1950s grey dress coat was by high street brand Jesiré, myself and every other Kate fan began to search the net to see if we could find one. Not only could we not find the exact piece, we could not find Jesiré! We were all quite disappointed to hear the firm had ceased trading in August after thirteen years in business.

Naturally countless numbers of 'Repli-Kates' bombarded former managing director of Jesiré, Martyn Vines with emails. Describing hearing the news about Kate wearing the £120 dress coat Mr Vines said

"I had a text first thing in the morning from my colleague Kelly Bird saying 'Oh my god, Kate Middleton is wearing Jesire'. I picked up the paper and there she was, she looked absolutely stunning. I felt very proud but also a tinge of sadness. To say we have been inundates with enquiries since is an understatement".

Mr Vines is obviously not going to let this opportunity slip by, He is introducing a new label to continue on from Jesire, I expect a certain grey dress coat will be included in the first collection. It will be designed by Berlin designer Kilian Kerner and will hit UK department stores this Autumn/Winter. 'The Kate' Effect' has become such a powerful force  all Kate has to do is wear one piece and it has literally saved a business. This is fantastic news for Jesiré and fans of Kate's style. Wishing Mr Vines and Kilian huge success with their new label. Kate undoubtedly knows the impact her style choices have in terms of sales, Perhaps she considered this factor when choosing what to wear for her first solo engagement?

If you simply cannot wait until the 'New Jesiré' launch, There are a couple of copies of Kate's dress coat for sale on ebay. (With many thanks to Anne Marie) It is rather amazing how less striking the piece is without Kate wearing it, perhaps she has tailoring work done on her pieces? The bidding for the coat below begins at £150 and will obviously fetch a much higher price than the original £120 it was retailing for in 2010. If any of you wish to bid Click Here for more details and best of luck!

Kate Middleton's relatives

Since Prince William started seeing Kate Middleton, much has been made of her middle class background. There has been media fascination with the 29-year-old's roots. Born into a middle class family in Bucklebury, her third cousin is a postman who now has an interesting story to tell. His relative is the new Duchess of Cambridge. Kate's extended family include a fishmonger and a 20-year-old student, who works part-time as a burlesque dancer.

However, Kate's uncle Gary Goldsmith, has been making the headlines recently for all the wrong reasons. The tattooed tycoon is living with a convicted criminal who once made off with £250,000. Julie-Ann Brown plundered the accounts of the car sales firm she worked for. She was spared a jail sentence but continued to indulge in a lavish lifestyle by dating a succession of wealthy men. She now shares Mr. Goldsmith's £1.5 million London home. Goldsmith was exposed two years ago, by a Sunday newspaper after offering cocaine to an undercover reporter at his Ibiza villa. The same location where the recent private photos of the Middletons were taken. Aside from Goldsmith's activities, Kate's family seem close knit and supportive. The Duchess has often described her sister Pippa as her best friend. Alice Goldsmith, Kate's aunt was recently quoted as saying 'I think she's too good for William. She doesn't know what she's letting herself in for.'

Copy Kate's looks, Dress up the Duchess, 'The Kate effect' this halloween and the latest updates!

It's been a quiet weekend for the Duchess, with no sightings or photographs to report but as always there is an excellent selection of tidbits. I enjoy adding them together and finishing up with a post one could only describe as a mixed bag of Kate news. :)

I've been hearing people are dressing up as Kate for Halloween and was doing some research on costumes and I found a very interesting piece on In Style, 'Kate Middleton Wedding Dress Up'. The 'dress up' feature was added months ago but I have just seen it for the first time. It allows you to 'dress' Kate in various wedding dresses, shoes, jewllery and tiaras. I chose a beautiful Oscar De La Renta gown and Duchess Kate looks beautiful in it. I think this would be a stunning look for her when attending a formal dinner or function. Do give it a try yourselves, It's excellent fun and took me less than a minute. You can share your choices via facebook and twitter. Click here to dress up Kate!

With Halloween fast approaching, It seems dressing up as Kate will be one of the most popular choices this year. Are any of you going as Kate to a fancy dress ball? I think people could emulate Kate by wearing something similar to any of her pieces but the most popular one will undoubtedly be the wedding dress. This Royal Wedding Dress Adult Costume is available for just under $40. It is described as

"Every little girl dreams of being a princess........
And this one's dreams came true. The Royal Wedding Dress Adult Costume includes: A white wedding style dress featuring a lovely lace overlay and a tiara with an attached veil - based on the look worn by Britain's favorite new princess".

If you are looking for a simpler option, The Kate Middleton Face Mask is an excellent alternative. Available for only £3.19. (I can only imagine seeing a Kate mask beside ghosts and witches :)) The mask comes with eye holes and an elastic strap.

Why not get the whole family involved and dress up as the Windsor family, There are a nice selection of masks Here.

Naturally, you all remember the touching story of nine year old cancer patient Fabian Bate. He not only touched Duchess Kate's heart but everyone who read his story. There has been splendid news for Fabian. It has now been confirmed that both his sisters are are perfect bone marrow matches for their brother. Fabian was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2006. The Duchess admitted she "admires his strength of chatacter".

Below Fabian is pictured with his two sisters, I am delighted to heard the good news and I'm sure Kate is too. Wishing Fabian a speedy recovery.

As you all know the Duchess has been busy privately visiting charities. It has been reported, Kate may not be able to support one very close to her heart. Sources say Kate was keen to work with the Blue Heart Campaign which raises awareness about human trafficking.  Kate wore a stunning red dress by Beulah to a recent gala fundraiser. Beulah has close links with the foundation. Sadly the charity is affiliated with the United Nations, a neutral organisation. Kate has been told it would not be appropriate for her to support this cause because of her close ties to the Queen - a head of state.

"Natasha and Lavinia (Both owners of the label Beulah) spent two months working with human trafficking victims in India and when Kate heard their tales she was completely behind the project. But because of UN protocol it was not deemed appropriate for her to be too visible within the campaign".

Duchess Kate would be an invaluable asset to the Blue Heart Campaign and I admire her for showing interest in a charity about trafficking. It is a shame she cannot become involved with this one but whoever she chooses to support will be very lucky and I know she will make a difference.

Kate's fashion influence is being felt worldwide even at the Miss World competition. The recently crowned Miss World Ireland, Holly Carpenter admitted she will be emulating Kate when she flies to Earls Court, England for the competition. Holly said

"I am going for a Kate Middleton look during the day time. I've got dresses from boutiques like Fran and Jane, and I'll be in heels everyday. Kate is definitely my theme, With her outfits, her dresses are always knee length with a clutch bag and simple jewellery. I am representing Ireland and I want to look classy".

Wishing Holly the best of luck. It would be wonderful to have a Miss World who emulates Kate. The competition takes place on November 6.

I was having a look through high street shop website and discovered many Kate inspired pieces. As Kate's pieces sell out so rapidly, I thought I would share these with you. Beginning with this beautiful Mango draped detail dress. The short sleeves dress is very similar to the black Issa Kate wore while out in London before the wedding. It is selling for under £30 and available in sizes XS - XL.

Next we have this beautiful Dorothy Perkins Bodycon Layered Dress. While it's red the structure and shape are very reminiscent of the Reiss Shola Kate wore while meeting the Obama's. It is selling for £40.

When Kate visited Birmingham, She wore a stunning McQueen georgette blouse. This A Wear Cream Crochet Top is similar in terms of colour and design. It is also suitable for workwear or could be teamed with jeans and flats. It is selling for £30.

Designer Karen Millen is world famous for her stunning designs. This Classic Investment Coat reminded of both Kate's Burberry trench and her favourite white coat with black buttons. It's a stunning piece and at £399 an investment for anyone's winter wardrobe.

Back when the Duchess was just Kate Middleton she wore dozens of beautiful dresses, especially during her time working at Jigsaw. She was photographed wearing a red knee length dress and this Dorothy Perkins Red Floral Dress is the perfect replicate.  Selling for just £32.

There is a huge variation of lace dress available on the high street at the moment. I believe there is something for everyone, all ages and sizes. Lace is obviously one of Kate's favourite's right now and the trend is everywhere.

This French Connection Angela Lace Dress is beautiful. Available in red and navy it is fully lined with lace overlay and a concealed zip at back. Stunning piece and very Kate. At 156 euro the quality is excellent for the price.

Next we have this Jane Norman V Front Dress. For just £45 this long sleeved lace dress is similar to Kate's Erdem. This elegant dress features a scallop edged neckline and hem with 3/4 length sleeves. The beautiful floral detail emulates Kate's favourite Collette Dinnigan dress. Available in black and red.

This beautiful A Wear Embelished Lace Dress is available in cream, red and navy. For just £60, it is long sleeved with stunning lace detail. I think lace is going to be the one to watch for the Christmas season this year. Beautiful dresses......

While all of the above are beautiful, this dress is my favourite of the lace ones I have chosen. The Jane Norman lace slash 3/4 sleeve lace dress is just £45 and comes in five colours. (What more could a girl ask for :)) navy, black, cream, read and grey. The dress is fitted with a figure hugging underlayer and ruching detail at the bust.

Kate Middleton may have been the victim of phone hacking

A phone hacking scandal in the UK widens to include the Duchess of Cambridge. Notable British celebrities including ex-Prime Minister  Tony Blair, Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex are said to have also been victims of this elaborate crime. Kate's phone or bank account may have been hacked by private investigator's working for the News of the World. Several journalists and editors have already been arrested. London police have pooled their resources to investigate this matter thoroughly.

Prince William and Prince Harry have already been identified as alleged victims of the phone hackers for 'The News'. Stories were run using intercepted information from private telephone conversations. This is definitely a worrying trend. It must be quite upsetting for Kate thinking it's a possibility that a simple conversation she may have shared with her mother could have been intercepted. The media intrusion into Kate's life is frighteningly similar to those Princess Diana suffered. Hopefully police will bring this matter to a conclusion swiftly.

Sarah Burton speaks on working with Kate!

Sarah Burton initially described working with Kate Middleton on her wedding dress as 'The experience of a lifetime' She not only designed her beautiful wedding gown but her evening dress and Pippa's infamous white dress too. Speaking about Kate she described her as 'One of the most lovely women she has ever met and very low maintenance'  Creating the dress was a 50/50 effort between her and Kate.  Burton adored the secrecy of it but felt she ruined the surprise when she was pictured running into the goring hotel wearing a fur coat from her last season. The dress which has inspired million of imitations around the world since the big day last Friday was only worn by Kate for a few hours yet will be her most famous creation as chief designer at McQueen.  After months of preparation and no doubt immense pressure she is looking forward to a nice vacation. Having just announced plans to visit California after their Canada visit, It will be fascinating to see if Kate remains a fan of the high street or collaborates again with a designer like Sarah Burton.  Audrey Hepburn has a stellar relationship with Givenchy, It would be fascinating to see Kate continue hers with the house of McQueen, proving they compliment her style so well at the wedding.

William's Belated Birthday Dinner + Kate Graces Marie Claire Cover

Hello to you all,
It has been revealed Prince William enjoyed a belated birthday dinner on July 2 (a week and a half after his actual birthday) with Kate and a group of close friends at Russian themed restaurant Mari Vanna in Knightsbridge, London.

Mari Vanna
Celebrating the Russian theme the group enjoyed flavoured vodka shots with William reportedly looking 'a little worse for wear'. Kate refrained from drinking much and left at 1 a.m while William and his friends stayed on until 3 a.m. before going to a friend's house for a party.

A look at 'The Fireplace Room' described as 'perfect for dinner parties'.

Mari Vanna Facebook

Mari Vanna is the new London branch of an international Russian chain with sister restaurants in Moscow, St Petersburg and New York. It is named after a Russian grandmother who welcomed diners into her home. It is aimed at Russians abroad and diners hoping to experience Russian cuisine.

A look at one of the restaurant's most popular dishes: Russian 'Blinis' with salmon roe served with sour cream, egg, onion and herbs.

Giles Goran from The Times wrote the following review about Mari Vanna but was distracted from the food :)

'It is the pleasantest of all surprises. Like something out of Eastern fairytales all chintzy and cottagey. The food is good, but it hardly matters, I spend most of the time surreptitiously looking around the room at the most beautiful women I have ever seen, anywhere'.

It sounds like William and Kate had a wonderful night with friends at Mari Vanna. For any of you considering visiting London it's a wonderful place to spend an evening.

Kate is the cover girl every magazine editor wants and upon first look it appears Marie Claire South Africa has scooped the industry's biggest coup of the moment but on closer inspection the 'photo' is actually an artist's impression.

From the Marie Claire article

'We were so inspired by her fairytale wedding and her life as a modern - day princess, which is why we elected Kate Middleton as our cover star for the August issue. The cover is actually a hyper real illustration, meant to be a fan art tribute to fashion's new royal icon.'

Marie Claire South Africa
Five illustrators dressed Kate in a print dress by designer Clive Rundle posing with her hand on her hip. No doubt Zimbabwe born Rundle who describes his designs as 'an extension of his whole thought process' will be hoping the cover encourages fans of Kate's style to look at his pieces.

A look at pieces from Mr Rundle's Summer 2011-2012 Collection. Not typically Kate's style, are they?

Clive Rundle
An up close look at Kate's face on the cover. The illustration appears to be based on the engagement photos. What do you think?

Tesco's copy of Kate's Reiss dress goes on sale for £30

The Reiss website crashed after millions of women attempted to buy the Reiss Shola dress Kate Middleton wore meeting the Obamas. However, many were left disappointed when the £175 dress sold out. There were only 1,000 originally available. Within hours the camel dress was being sold on eBay for up to £500. Due to the hysteria 600 more copies were made. The label's founder David Reiss said: 'We are not greedy. I could have issued a repeat of 6,000 or 7,000 more but I wouldn't dream of doing that. The Reiss woman doesn't want to seen in the same dress as everyone else.'

Now shoppers have a chance to purchase a replica made my Tesco! The £30 bandage camel dress is certainly similar. For such a low price it gives shoppers a chance to emulate the Duchess on a budget. Jan Marchant, buying director at Tesco said: 'Our customers love Kate's look. She is now a true style icon and flying the flag for British high street fashion'. Unlike other royals, Kate's fashion is affordable, making her one of the most watched fashion influences at the moment!

Kate Middleton plays Prince Charming

At just ten years old, Kate Middleton proved she was ready to be a royal by starring in a school play as 'Prince Charming'. Kate is clearly a natural and shows off her acting skills wonderfully playing a lovesick prince. 'Oh wow, woe, woe is me. I'm in love. I can't eat. I can't sleep, I can't concentrate on everything. My memory is gone'. A friend asked her 'How long has this being going on?' The Duchess of Cambridge displays perfect comic timing replying, 'Has what been going on?' The audience filled with parents of the school children bursts into a fit of laughter. Kate throughly entertained the crowd.

Little did she know in 1992 that she would be marrying 'Prince Charming'. Kate participated as often as she could at St Andrew's prep school in Pangbourne, Berks. She also played 'Eliza Doolittle' and narrated 'Joseph and the  Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat'. Kate's most memorable role as a girl who speaks about marrying a prince. He's all I ever hoped for, rich and handsome, he'll fall in love with me and marry me. Yes, oh yes dear William'. This is quite a massive coincidence and surely very entertaining for the Middleton family and indeed, the royal couple to look back on!
